This free bespoke event is designed to support staff from schools and colleges, services and councils to navigate the changing landscape of careers guidance.

The careers strategy, statutory guidance and Gatsby benchmarks take centre stage this year so there will be a range of sessions that will touch on these areas alongside key topics currently on the careers and education agenda.

David Andrews, a leading national expert on careers education and guidance will be launching the event as the keynote speaker.

Join us to find out how the strategy will affect your school or college and what you can do to fulfil the statutory guidance. The afternoon also offers opportunities to attend workshops, network with staff from other schools, staff from C&K Careers and other services, you will also have the opportunity to ask questions and obtain information from experts.

This event is ideal for school leaders, careers coordinators and teachers with careers responsibility within their role.

The careers strategy and the Quality in Careers Standard

Discover how to quality assure your CEIAG provision. We'll introduce the 2018 revision of Quality in Careers which has been fully aligned to the 8 Gatsby benchmarks for good career guidance. You will explore how the Quality in Careers Standard can support you to implement the Gatsby benchmarks and meet statutory requirements. There will be the opportunity to gain an insight from two schools (The Joseph Rowntree School, York and South Hunsley School and Sixth Form College, Humberside) who have recently achieved the standard - hints, tips and benefits of achieving the award.

Learning from career and labour market information (LMI)

Find out about labour market information C&K Careers publish and how to use it towards meeting the Gatsby benchmark 2 and the careers strategy. Labour market information shows what sorts of employment opportunities exist in the area and which sectors are growing. It can help you guide your students and inform their parents/carers of career paths and where and how numerous the vacancies are; they can use the information to make more informed choices about future study and training.

Are children and young people affected by gang activity a safeguarding issue?

Discover how to respond effectively to the needs of children and young people who are at risk of gang related violence and harm. Looking at the reasons that young people become involved in gangs, the particular risks associated with gang membership for the young people and the risks of being affected by gang activity in other ways (e.g. victims of gang-related violence; having siblings who are gang members). And how effective multi-agency working will be key to preventing young people suffering harm in the gang context.

Inspiring and engaging young people using interactive and online tools

Careers advisers design and deliver sessions to inspire and engage young people. Find out about one of the interactive online tools that C&K careers advisers use in school. The Buzz Quiz is a personality profile that careers advisers have used creatively to deliver preventative NEET work and engage young people in years 7 and 8 upwards. Encouraging the development of self-awareness skills and linking personality types to the world of work.

Nexus in school - Achieving positive outcomes for year 11 students through supported work placements

Find out how extended work placements and the wrap around support offered can empower students to re-engage in education and raise their aspirations for the future.

Introduction to children's and young people’s mental health

Get an overview of recent statistics in regards to CYP mental health, with a focus on how mental health issues present in a school setting. Find out how these issues impact on students readiness/ability to learn, and how behaviour serves as a means of communication. Attendees will leave feeling upskilled on how to manage mental health issues, with a deeper understanding of the risk factors that are out of our control, and the protective factors which we can impact upon as professionals. Generic strategies to use in the classroom will be highlighted and hopefully encourage a desire for deeper learning. There will be opportunity for discussion throughout.

Engaging with employers to create the workforce of the future

Find out how C&K Careers Employer Engagement Team can help your school or college develop their employer engagement strategy; involving health and safety checked work experience, employer and provider events, vacancy advertising, matching and placing.

Preparation for adulthood - How a specialist careers adviser can help raise aspirations, support transition and improve routes through to employment

We work closely with schools, colleges, parents, social services and local authority SEN departments to help make transitions strong and meaningful for SEN young people and to encourage the preparation for adulthood agenda. In this workshop we’ll be looking at how an independent and impartial specialist careers adviser can help all parties to improve the life chances of young people with additional needs, supporting them and their families to make good plans for their futures.

Staff from C&K Careers, Prevent, Go Higher West Yorkshire, Stronger Families and more will be available to chat to throughout the event.

Refreshments and a light lunch will be provided.
